A doubleheader meeting in the former schoolhouse where a WHS meeting was held a few years ago: Author Nan Forler and illustrator Peter Etril Snyder will join us to explain how their recent book, Winterberries andApple Blossoms, on the life of a fictional Mennonite girl came about and some of the fun – and challenges – in doing it. 

 

Turning the Past into Words: Archival Treasures from Two Ontario Mennonite Historians. Lewis J. Burkholderand Lorna Bergey, two “home grown” Ontario Mennonite historians, left legacies of published works and unpublished archives. Laureen Harder-Gissing from the Menonnite Archives of Ontario at Conrad Grebel University College will provide a glimpse into their collections.

The former Mutual Life / Sun Life Financial – Canada, 227 King St. S. at Union Street, Waterloo

The Sun Life Financial (former Mutual Life) landmark building opened in 1912 so WHS is happy to celebrate a centennial with the people at Waterloo’s iconic insurance company. Krystal Rycroft, Sun Life’s archivist will detail the building and company histories. After the presentation there will be a tour of the historic portion. Parking and information: Free parking in the Union Street lot. Please use only the main entrance directly across Union Street from the parking lot. Everyone is requested to sign in at the security desk and will be given a visitor’s tag. WHS volunteers will give directions to the auditorium where the meeting is being held. You are asked to stay in the areas of the meeting and tour.

Mayor Carl Zehr will open this meeting, another joint centenary celebration! Guest speaker Dr. Ulrich Frisse will look at some of the significant aspects of the City of Kitchener’s 100 years of cityhood. This is the meeting when the WHS 2011 annual volume will be distributed. It is free for 2011 members.
